Founded in 1931, the year of the County's Centennial celebration, the Juniata County Historical Society's mission is the discovery, preservation and publication  of Juniata County's history. Our Archives Room is located in the lower level of the County Library in Mifflintown, where all of the Society's resources for historical and genealogical research are located.  The Society utilizes an all volunteer staff to provide public hours of operation on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 AM to 3 PM.    

The Society's museum is located in the only surviving building of the Tuscarora Academy, the site of the first secondary school in Juniata County.  The museum has exhibits highlighting the County's past, including the old Walnut post office, an old time doctor's office, a typical Academy boarding room for both a male and female student, Hosecart # 3 from the Port Royal Friendship Fire Company and the limber belonging to the David H. Wilson GAR Post 134 in Mifflintown, PA.   The Tuscarora Academy Museum is open on Sunday afternoons in June, July and August from 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM  or by special arrangement at other times.   
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Preservation of historic sites has also become part of our mission and we are proud to own the Pomeroy Academia Covered Bridge, which at 278'4" feet, is the longest remaining covered bridge in Pennsylvania.  Listed on the National Register of Historic Places it crosses the Tuscarora Creek near Academia.   Built in 1902 by James N. Groninger, the Bridge is a double span Burr Arch design.  In June 2009 the Society completed an eight year, $1.4 M restoration of the Bridge.
