SPRING MEETING AND DINNER SET

The Juniata County Historical Society will hold their annual meeting and Spring dinner program Wednesday, April 24 at Walker Grange Hall, Mexico, PA at 6:30 p.m. A roast chicken meal is on the menu.

Speaker is Matthew Dodd who will present songs and stories of the Civil War to guests. Dodd will be acting out what it was like to live during time of the War Between the States. He had presented to us a rendition of a hobo a few years ago.

Dressed in period soldier’s clothing, he takes listeners back in time to feel what it was like to be a soldier, civilian, loved-one-at-home or escaped slave in the Civil War era. Through period songs, excerpts from actual letters, and anecdotes (humorous and poignant), he evokes the feelings and passions of that pivotal era of American history. Dodd bypasses the stories of the generals and the battle movements and concentrates on the feelings and stories of the individual soldier (North and South), the mother, father, or sweetheart left at home, and of the men and women who “followed the drinking gourd” to freedom.

Cost of the dinner is $25 per person. You may call ahead (717-436-5152) to reserve ticket(s), but all tickets must be paid in advance by April 16.

Stop at the the Archives Research Library Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Or, if you want your ticket(s) mailed to you, please send a check to Juniata County Historical Society, 498 Jefferson Street, Suite B., Mifflintown, PA 17059, and include a self-addressed, stamped return envelope.
